Many homes have striking architectural details from elaborate trim to iron work—and who can forget the glossy white columns popping up in many of today’s new homes. Many times, homeowners leave the columns because they are unsure as to what to do with them. Here are four easy ways to add pizzazz to your architectural columns.

1. Most often columns are painted bright glossy white. By simply choosing a different color, your columns will not stand out as much. Changing the sheen level of the column will make a visual difference as well. A flat isn’t recommended because fingerprints will easily be seen, however an eggshell or satin is a lower sheen level than gloss. Make sure that the capital of the column, the top part, as well as the base of the column blend with existing trim and molding.

2. Applying texture materials such as stucco or plaster will add depth to your column. A professional faux finisher will have a variety of textures that can be applied to both round and square columns. Many times a different finish can also be applied to the base and capital of the column to accent the texture or color. Professional artists have a variety of textures available that mimic natural stone. Beware of using joint compound or other “soft plasters” intended for drywall use. These plasters are soft, and may nick and chip over time.

3. Adding a marble look to columns is another option. There are two different types of marbleizing techniques. A fantasy marble looks painted on, and does not mimic a specific marble found in nature. Yet, many times a fantasy marble may look extremely realistic. If you are going for an authentic look, make sure to relay this to the faux finish studios you are interviewing. Be specific with what look you are going for, such as a carrera marble, or yellow sienna.

4. A colorwash can add depth and be visually interesting on a column. A light glaze or stain is rubbed over the column to give a variation of color. The technique can add an aged and historic look to both interior and exterior columns.

Remember, these changes can be applied to both interior and exterior columns. No longer will your glossy white columns be an eyesore. From changing the sheen of paint, to the color, or adding a faux finish technique to your columns, the change will be welcomed in any room.

The process of hiring a professional contractor to tackle your bathroom renovations can make your head spin pretty quick.

First, there are many bath renovation companies out there. Look under ‘General Contractors’ or ‘Bathroom Remodeling’ in the phone book and you will see what we mean…there are hundreds of bathroom remodelers and general contractors in each area. On top of that, there are hundreds of other great contractors that remodel bathrooms but are not in the phone book.

Second, it is pretty easy to go around calling yourself a professional bathroom remodeling pro. People don’t necessarily need an office or a lot of fancy equipment or tools to start a business. Therefore, individuals that have done some repairs on a few houses or rooms can try to trick you into believing they are a highly skilled and experienced bathroom remodeling professional. If they have a truck, a tool belt, and a business card they could fool a lot of people!

Finally, there are many different types of contractors that remodel bathrooms. There are handymen, general contractors, builders, construction companies, and companies that specialize in only bathroom renovations.

So what do you do when looking for a contractor to remodel your bathroom?

We recommend:

• Asking your friends and neighbors to see if they have had good or bad experiences with local contractors. Simply knowing that another person has had a good experience with a contractor prior to calling them lessens your chance of hiring a problem.

• Call 3 or 4 companies to bid on your remodeling project. This will help you determine fair market price for your job. This does not mean you should always go with the lowest price. You should go with the company you feel most comfortable with and who you feel will do the best job. If an individual is offering a real low price you should ask yourself, “why?”.

• Decide exactly what you want to do to remodel your bathroom. At a minimum you should have a few general ideas before calling a contractor. They can help you make some final decisions, but you need to be able to explain your basic needs before letting them talk you into things.

• Try to decide if your work can be accomplished by a handyman, or if it is more involved. If you are simply laying some tile, painting, and changing some fixtures you should feel confident that a quality handyman could handle this work. If you are talking about tearing things up and changing the entire bathroom around, then your best chance of success is by hiring an experienced general contractor.

• Make sure the company has insurance. There is a chance for injury and for destruction of your house when remodeling a bathroom. As mentioned above there are many fly-by-night contractors that may not be insured. Ask them for their insurance company’s phone number and call them to prove they are insured. If you skip this part you could be held liable for an uninsured worker’s injury while working on your house. You could also be left with the bill for tons of repairs if an uninsured contractor leaves you with a destroyed bathroom or house!

• Ask if the bath remodel contractor will be able to handle all of the work you require themselves, or if they will have to sub some of the work out to other companies (such as a plumber). If they are subbing jobs out, make sure that their contract states that they are still directly responsible for all work. In other words, you will not have a situation where a plumber installed your new toilet incorrectly and the contractor is telling you that it is not his problem. What happens if you can’t get in touch with the plumber they hired after the job is complete? You want one person to be held responsible.

• If your bathroom remodel requires a general contractor, or you simply decide to hire a company that states that they are general contractors, make sure they have a valid General Contractors License

• Always get a statement of work performed in writing. Keep this filed away. Make sure the statements clearly state what work is to be performed.

• Ask if the bathroom remodeling comes with guarantees. These are factors to weigh when looking at the total cost estimates left by different contractors.

• Some contractors require an upfront payment. Agree to a payment schedule (which is a written document that clearly states how much and when payments are due). Make sure your payment schedule is discussed and documented on your contract prior to beginning work. Stick to this schedule even if the contractor asks for early payment. You do not want to get into a situation where you have paid for the majority of the bathroom remodeling work, but the majority of the remodeling in your bathroom is not completed!!…these situations often end in unfinished or poorly finished jobs.

• Check in on your bathroom remodeling progress regularly- try to catch potential problems or misunderstandings before it is too late.

Good luck with your bathroom and remodeling needs!

Many professionals choose apartment living over home ownership. The flexibility that renting provides is a perfect solution for professionals in dynamic careers. Access to transit services is close by or you can find properties right downtown! And who needs the added stress of property taxes, building maintenance and bill after bill after bill when renting is so simple?

Apartment living is clearly a great choice, but how do you turn those eggshell-white walls into a comfortable home to match your professional lifestyle? It’s not as hard as you might think!

Before you begin

Read the lease or rental agreement - what can and can’t you do? Can you drill into the walls? Can you paint? Knowing your restrictions will help you determine what you can do. If in doubt, speak with your building landlord before beginning any questionable projects - This could save you headaches down the road.

Add Colour!

The walls are the background of your home and set the tone for each room. White walls in apartments can make an apartment seem cold and institutional. Make yourself feel truly at home by dressing up the walls.

If you paint, select a light or neutral colour. Many lease or rental agreements require that you return the walls to their original colour when you move-out. Lighter colours are much easier to paint over than dark, bold colours and they can make small rooms look larger.

If you don’t want to paint, you can still dress up your walls with wall hangings, fabric, removable wallpaper boarders and stickers, stencils or artwork.

Create a Theme

A staple of a student apartment is mix-and-match furniture. Professionals often hang onto these not-so-treasured heirlooms far longer than necessary. Pull the room together by getting rid of those worn-out hand-me-downs and invest in furniture that compliments your style and taste. Accent your room with decorations and colours that create unity.

Focus on Functionality

Apartment living is all about functionality. Create a useful space that is also stylish by dressing up your storage space. Unique wall-shelves make a statement and make use of vertical space. Doors on cabinets and shelves create a clean and organized look by keeping otherwise cluttered looking items out of sight.

Less is more

Clutter shrinks rooms. When decorating a small space, chose a few key pieces and keep the knickknacks to a minimum. Create the illusion of more space by choosing furniture and accessories that have clean light lines and let light pass through the room. Use doors and dividers that are made from glass or mirrors. Find furniture that has exposed legs and light materials. Hanging lights, shelves and plants can increase vertical space and keep the floor from feeling heavy.

Color Is A Catalyst

Color is the prime mover in decorating. There is no limit to its versatility. it can change the shape and size of a room, disguise it’s architectural defects, emphasize and dramatize it’s good points.

Color is the catalyst that brings a room to life.

Clever use of color creates the mood and atmosphere in a room…serene, gay or dramatic. Color plays it cool, or turns around and is warm and friendly. You can use any color with any period or style of furnishing and it will be perfectly compatible. Most important, color influences your own mood, evokes a personal, emotional response…it can make your spirits soar or soothe and relax you.

When you enter a room, color makes the first impression, and so it should be one of the first considerations in your decorating plans. Creating your own color scheme is not as difficult as it sounds. An analysis of your of your wardrobe might provide a clue to the colors you are happiest with, your favorite color in fact.

If you favor neutral shades and spark your ensembles with vivid accessories, then a subdued background with bright accents is your best bet in the home. If your wardrobe reveals more pungent hued clothes with a repetition of one color, select this color and work around it.

You may own an original painting, which you treasure. Display it against a neutral background and key your color scheme to the painter’s palette. In fact, let any colorful, prized possession inspire your color scheme.

Remember that a small swatch of color looks totally different than when it covers a whole wall. In fact, always bear in mind that color changes color when used in a large area. it becomes stronger, brighter and more intense.

Come Alive!…with Color in the kitchen

Let color burst forth in your kitchen. Dispense with that antiseptic look which sterile white, often creates. Match walls to the new colored refrigerators, ovens, dishwashers; make floors, ceilings, cupboards sparkle with bright shades to cheer up your kitchen. Remember, a daring color changes the shape and size of any room, gives it totally new dimensions.

Color Underfoot Provokes a Theme

Vivid color on the floor in vinyl, mosaic, tile or carpet makes a good jumping off point for a color scheme. Certain vivid colors which can look too harsh on walls, are doubly effective underfoot. They look more subdued while still remain lively, make successful backgrounds for white rugs, painted furniture, antique as well as modern pieces. Pale colored floors reflect light, help to enlarge a small room. Either way, a bright floor can be the color anchor of your decorating scheme.

Once upon a time, shower curtains were functional… and they were boring. Not today. Shower curtains are now decorative as well as useful. They can be bold and vibrant or simple and understated. A little looking can turn up some truly unique designs.

There are many options for those looking for something beyond the simple floral prints, stripes, polka dots, and solids. Bed Bath & Beyond, for example, offers a Life Magazine shower curtain. This unique design features reproductions of classic Life magazine photographs, and costs approximately $30.

Gallery Street offers truly unique shower curtains. For $135, the company will reproduce any photograph onto a fabric shower curtain. You can use photos of your family, vacation, pets, or anything else you desire — talk about a one-of-a-kind shower curtain. You can also place favorite sayings, children’s artwork, or personal drawings on the curtain. If you prefer, the company also offers a selection of professional artwork that can be reproduced on shower curtains.

The Bathroom Marquee offers a new idea in shower curtains. Their Out-a-Sight shower curtain folds neatly into a box when it is not being used.

Shower curtains are available in a number of styles to suit various professions and hobbies. For example, Bungalow Beach offers a curtain that is sure to appeal to surfers. The Longboards Shower Curtain costs $65 and features palm trees and surfboards. If you are looking for a unique gift for a hunter or fisherman, consider the unique shower curtains from Fish and Gifts. Fish and Gifts offers a shower curtain that features antique fishing lures. Using the art of Jon Q. Wright, this curtain is made in bold colors.

To add a touch of style or pizzazz to an otherwise merely functional room, consider a unique shower curtain. This will liven up your space and make it much more personal.

Color is appreciated by everyone. Don’t most people have a favorite color? The colors we choose to surround ourselves with can reflect our various personalities and affect our moods. We make important choices when selecting colors for our living spaces and for personal adornment, such as what we wear. Color theory is used by artists and designers but it can also be applied to every day use for any kind of decorating that we choose to do. The variety of colors we choose can affect each other when combined and in their relationships to one another.

Lets start at the beginning. Every color in the universe is made up of three primary
colors; red, yellow and blue. Difficult to believe, isn’t it? This was learned long ago
in the seventeenth century by Sir Isaac Newton who analyzed a ray of sunlight
projected through a glass prism. The dispersed ray of light separates into a
spectrum of color looking very much like a rainbow. You might wonder about black
and white. Actually, they are not colors at all, white is the presence of all color and
black is the absence of all color. All colors displayed through the prism at once
displays as white, the absence of light is black. From these color theory
observations, we not only learn about the three primaries; but also that there are
three secondary colors; orange, green and violet. The secondary colors are made by
adding two equal parts of the primary colors, such as when mixed, red and yellow
make orange. You may have learned this as a child in art class in school. These six
colors, primaries and secondaries, make up the basic color wheel.

The next set of colors we call the tertiaries. The six tertiary colors are made up of
equal parts of one primary and one secondary color. For instance, blue (primary)
plus green (secondary) makes a blue-green. All twelve colors; the three
complimentary colors, three secondary colors and six tertiary colors create the
complete color wheel. Try making your own color wheel by starting with red at the
top and moving around a circle clockwise; red-orange, orange, yellow-orange,
yellow, yellow-green, green, blue-green, blue, blue-violet, violet, red-violet and
back to red.

There are a many other color properties to learn but here are a few of them. A color
by itself is a pure hue. The addition of white to a color changes that color to a “tint”.
Adding black changes the color to a “shade”. A “tone” is created if both black and
white are added, this makes a grayer version of the color. the relative warmth or
coolness of colors Another property of color is called temperature, colors can be
warm or cool. Warm colors have red, orange or yellow present and cool colors
contain green, blue and violet. However, it is also possible to have a warm blue or a
cool red. If a little of a warm color is mixed with a blue, it will become warmer. The
same principles apply if a bit of a cool color is added to red. Color temperatures are
formed by variations in the pigment. Color temperature can create a mood and also
depth. Warm colors come forward and cool colors recede.

Putting colors together and using them in different color schemes can be exciting
but sometimes difficult to know where to begin. There are different types of color
schemes that can be created using color, and here are a few to try. One type, the
easiest to begin with, would be a monochromatic color scheme. This means using
variations of one color only. This color can be modified by adding black and/or
white to create tints, shades and tones and vary the intensity of the color itself. This
type of color scheme is rather subtle with little color contrast.

Another type of color scheme would be the analogous color scheme in which you
would use three colors that are adjacent to one another on the color wheel, or
neighbors. An example would be, green, blue-green and blue. This type of color
scheme works well because the neighboring colors create a color harmony. When
used in a design, one color is dominant while the others are used to enhance the
color. Again, the intensity of each color can be varied with black and white.

The strongest of color schemes would be the complimentary color schemes.
Complimentary colors are directly across from each other on the color wheel. For
instance, red and green, blue and orange, and yellow and violet are all
complimentaries. When complimentary colors are placed next to each other, they
create energy and movement. Two complimentaries create a strong contrast,
intensify one another and attract attention. Often its best to use a warm color with a
cool complimentary but keep in mind that the warm color will come forward while
the cool color recedes. Use the two complimentary colors carefully, as too much of a
good thing can be overpowering!

Balance your designs and color schemes, whether you’re using paint, fabric, yarn or
decorating a room. By repeating color in a design, emphasis is given to the effect
produced by each color and will carry the viewer’s eye from one part to the next.
This movement or flow around the pattern is called the rhythm of color. Contrast is
important too; use lights (tints) and darks (shades) to add impact to your design.
Also balance by keeping colors somewhat uncomplicated. Too many colors and too
much detail will distract from the overall design.

Each person uses color differently to express themselves. Experiment with color and
let your own intuition lead you to your own unique color expression.

Landscape lighting is an effective method of brightening your property while adding an element of safety and security. Landscape lighting is beautiful, but its practicality purposes are undeniable.

It can be terrifying to be attacked in the dark. Landscape lighting can provide enough light to deter a criminal from approaching you or your property in the dark. The additional safety elements which landscape lighting provides are truly worth way more than the cost of professionally installing landscape lighting.

When something is beautiful to look at, people tend to appreciate it a bit more. Landscape lighting is able to enhance your home’s value and your business’ overall popularity. Landscape lighting can make your property more identifiable. When your home is tastefully lit up with the help of landscape lighting, your home becomes easier for friends and family to identify. Your neighbors will also appreciate the special added quality your landscape lighting will provide. Your business becomes more readily identifiable to potential clients. With beautification via landscape lighting, you are sending a clear message that you care about your home and that you care about the quality of the neighborhood you live in. Sometimes, it just takes one person to beautify their home to inspire the rest of the neighborhood to follow suit. A sense of pride that flows throughout a neighborhood is likely to increase the value of the neighborhood, regardless of how initially upscale or down scale the neighborhood starts off.

Having landscape lighting installed is not an invasive process. A qualified landscaper with ample landscape lighting expertise can install your new landscape lighting with relative ease, and since most of the work the is required, sometimes all, can be completed from outside, there is no need to move furniture, rearrange a room, or even alter your daily life.

Well placed landscape lighting is simply practical. Who wouldn’t be more comfortable walking around outside their home or business, whether it’s to their car or out to the mailbox, in better quality landscape lighting. With the additional light, you won’t be chased inside with the sun any longer. Picnics outside are more fun when they have the freedom to end naturally, not by the time of day. Burgers, hotdogs, and crab feasts are always better with family, friends, and a night of serious camaraderie. Peaceful nights on the patio are always better when there is some nicely accentuated landscape lighting illuminating your experience.

If you are interested in just exploring the possibility of landscape lighting, it is recommended that you contact a qualified landscaper to talk about your landscape lighting options. Not all landscapers can handle landscape lighting jobs, so be sure to research your choice of landscaper before committing or allowing them to install your landscape lighting. Beautiful landscape lighting can really light up your property in an attractive manner, improper landscape lighting is bound to cause headaches. Make sure that your landscape lighting expert is truly and expert before hiring. Installing landscape lighting should be an enjoyable process from beginning to end, and the end result should be a phenomenal improvement to your property.

Finding cheap shutters for your home could be a hit or miss situation. While they do exist, you will need to do some research and prepare for the investment of your window shutters. While choosing interior window shutters that are made of wood can add great value to your home, it is important that you evaluate whether the expense is worth it in some of the rooms. There are window shutters available in plastic, vinyl, and other materials that will cost you much less, but they will look of a lower quality as well.

Tip #1: How To Get Huge Discounts

If you are on a strict budget, then you need to look for a retailer that will offer you wholesale wood shutters at a discounted price that you can install yourself. These are an excellent choice for someone who loves DIY projects.

Tip #2: Finding Shutters Made From Quality Materials

After you decide to purchase these discounted individual shutters, then you need to remember a few things while you shop. One of the things that you need to pay close attention to is what the shutters are made of. This can make a huge difference in the quality of the shutters.

Shutters come in many different woods, but the wood material that you should look for is basswood. It is a hard wood with a grain that is indistinct, so it is easy to paint or stain with great results.

Tip #3: Mounting Considerations

Mounting your shutters is something that you need to consider before choosing and ordering them. In some cases, it may be that you will have to reevaluate how you plan to mount the shutters. A professional company will be able to offer you some guidance in mounting your shutters, so that you will be completely satisfied with your purchase.

Research is essential before buying any kind of shutters, but even more essential when you are looking at discount shutters. There are, of course, brand names in shutters, so you will want to see what kinds are offered before you order them or purchase them. If you will take some time, then you will be able to find wood shutters that both meet your budget needs and your decorating needs. Then you will be on your way to making that house into a warm and inviting home.

There are many discount outlets that offer a variety of such decorative articles at very reasonable prices.

Many curios, hand carved photo frames, candle stands and elegant vases are available. Discount curios for showcase cabinets are a favorite among discount shoppers.

These items are discounted to meet the existent competitive rates. Each store displays work of excellent craftsmanship. It is essential to do a little research on the store and supplier, before a purchase. If it is a reputed store offering the discounted sale, the buyer need not worry about the quality of the product. If the store is new, then checking the quality of the item, with the help of a professional, is beneficial.

Furnishings available online can be shipped to the customer. It is important to identify a supplier who will cancel the order, if the item turns out to be of inferior quality. If you have become the victim of a flood you might ask yourself, do I need to call in a professional? After all, it does not look that bad. If you are considering doing some water damage repair yourself you need to read this article. It might help you make up your mind.

When you think of water damage restoration you might think that all that is involved is sucking up the water and putting some fans down. This is pretty easy and you can probably do this yourself and save a lot of money or save an insurance claim. It is not quite that easy though. For starters even if the job did just involve sucking up the water you would not have the right equipment to do so. A shop vac or rental carpet cleaner does not have the same vacuum power of a truck mounted carpet cleaning extractor. Plus the average spill involves hundreds of gallons. How many times would you have to fill that shop vac.

And as far as fans go, not just any fan will do. Professional fans cost around three hundred dollars each and are capable of putting out quite a bit of airflow. Much more than that box fan of yours can produce. If you are still not convinced to hire a professional you should consider the fact that water damage restoration these days is much more than sucking up the water and putting down fans. They also pay close attention to drying the structure and controlling the humidity levels on the home. That simple job might actually require drywall removal and expensive dehumidifiers. They might have to pull up some flooring, remove insulation, etc. You need someone with the experience to get it done right. After all, you have to live in this house for years to come and you do not want problems later down the line.

Hopefully you have decided to use a professional if you ever have a water damage job. It really is the only way to go to protect your home and your family. If you can not find one just call your insurance adjuster. They will be happy to give you a list of preferred vendors. Good luck.
